About the Dunedin region
Is there a difference between driving trucks and cleaning? Yes! Is there a difference between running a transport business and a cleaning business. Probably not! Ask Nick Rogan about his transition to Dunedin regional manager and steering a fleet of owner operators, however, and he’ll concede it was a huge learning curve.
But he’s loving it.
In 2004 Nick started his one-man Crest cleaning business with five customers. He soon built up to 13 through providing good old fashioned service. As regional manager, he looks after over 20 individual franchisees. And that’s just around Dunedin. Nick says there’s all Otago to tap into yet and he has big goals for where Crest is headed. After all Dunedin is where Crest began.
Nick has Crest director Grant Mc Lauchlan to thank for encouraging him into the business to begin with. Nick was tired of the transport industry – having spent 12 years in his own business, driving a truck and trailer unit moving containers around Dunedin. It was more than enough time to have Nick pulling his hair out - a point, he told his accountant one day. That accountant happened to be Grant McLauchlan, the founding director of Crest. Grant quickly suggested a Crest franchise as an alternative to Nick.
There he was, in his mid-40s, being asked to make a huge career shift - into an arena that was quite foreign.
“It was completely different – but I needed a change and the cleaning industry has great potential.”
Nick thrived – doing all the cleaning himself, while building customers. But, when the opportunity arose to take on the master franchisee and don the regional manager’s hat, Nick was ready. He sold his business to other franchisees to focus on his new role. It was a huge learning curve – especially the administration side, but Nick can’t keep away from it.
“I love it – it’s been a good challenge. “
He takes the responsibility for over 20 individual business operators seriously and has a great approach. With so much potential for growth around Otago, Nick must balance his time between building a customer base and recruiting franchisees while looking after those under him. It’s a focal point of Crest’s commitment. Everyone’s an individual – with different outlooks and issues. Most come into the business, like Nick, with no previous experience in cleaning, which is great, because they can be correctly trained in modern cleaning techniques and hygienic practices
And that’s the key which puts Crest above others, according to Nick - Crest’s strong belief in training systems and helping others achieve.
“I think it’s because they strive to make people succeed. The more they succeed, the more Crest succeeds and grows.”
It’s not about selling a franchise to someone and sending them off alone. Nick says Crest has the systems in place that help with training, use of equipment, budgeting, financing and ongoing support that grows people’s confidence to build a profitable business.
“Crest really has a long term outlook that gets people up and running and succeeding.”
Crest instills good customer service practices and teaches all franchisees how to look after their customers.
Nick has gained a lot of satisfaction from seeing his team grow and develop as property service professionals.
